Tomorrow’s HR Talent Apprentice: First Year Complete
Hannah Jackson • February 18, 2020

It’s been a whirlwind first year since I started as Nova’s first Tomorrow’s HR Talent Apprentice. I have developed so much throughout my time with Nova, and I feel proud to be part of such a dynamic and passionate company.

In my day-to-day role at Nova, I contribute to and support the entire recruitment team with sourcing, screening, testing, and creating long-term relationships with our candidates. One of the things I love most about my role with Nova is the variation as the apprenticeship is about all of HR, not just recruitment! As that is the case, I also get to learn how strategic operations and immigration that help to give me a more well-rounded view of HR in Cayman.

What I’ve Learned as an HR Talent Apprentice

Each day is a chance for me to learn something new, as each day brings new challenges! On the recruitment side, I have further developed my understanding of the Cayman market and how to identify, attract, and engage top talent using various sourcing strategies.

I have had the chance to work on Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) contracts, market mapping for niche industries, conduct employee engagement surveys as well as providing ongoing support for the recruitment of FS support positions with Nova. I have had continuous support from my colleagues during my apprenticeship and feel encouraged to be learning from some of the brightest minds in the industry.

I can honestly say that I have learned many invaluable life skills while being at Nova, and genuinely understand the importance of soft skills. Some of the skills that I’ve come to appreciate are: collaborating with others, betting on yourself, and maintaining a creative mindset! These are life skills that I will carry with me even as my apprenticeship comes to an end.

Stepping up to Responsibility

Finding the right balance between work, study, and personal life took me a few months to get the hang of, but the journey has been more comfortable with the support of such a fantastic team.

Each day in the office brings new challenges and new insights that have helped me to grow in confidence both personally and professionally. With the turn of my first year on the apprenticeship, I have also recently been promoted to Recruitment Resourcer and am so excited to step up my role in the team and take on more responsibility.

The Final Year as the HR Talent Apprentice

So far, it has been a fantastic experience, and I am looking forward to the rest of my time as Nova’s ‘Tomorrow’s HR Apprentice’. Not only am I working day-to-day with industry professionals, but I am also obtaining an HR qualification with the support of Nova.

I’ve already completed my aPHR , and this upcoming year, I will be completing my PHR certification as well as focusing more on the HR consulting side of the apprenticeship.

As Nova’s HR Talent Apprentice, I have been given me so many opportunities to grow as an HR professional, and I’m excited by what the rest of the program has in store!

Until next time,

Hannah
